    Central Abaco District Council takes office  

    Candidates for Central Abaco’s three townships, Marsh Harbour and Spring City, Dundas Town and Murphy Town, took the oath of office in Magistrate’s Court Two on June 30. Senior Island Administrator Preston Cunningham presided and led the members of the three town committees through the closed process of electing their chairman, deputy chairman and members to represent their towns on the Central Abaco District Council. Those chosen to serve on the Council then met briefly to elect their Chief Councillor and Deputy Chief Councillor. Town Committee Chairmen are automatically assigned a Council seat.

    Marsh Harbour Spring City Town Committee

    During the Marsh Harbour and Spring City Town Committee meeting on August 21 members reviewed contract bids and awarded contracts for the new fiscal year and discussed other town matters. The Committee reviewed and awarded contracts for public restroom maintenance, grave yards, parks and verges as well as for trash pick-up for the Marsh Harbour and Spring City areas at the meeting.

    Sea Spray celebrates Goombay with KB

    On Thursday, July 18, Sea Spray Resort held their 4th annual Goombay Festival, which has been sponsored by Kalik and Commonwealth Brewery. This night was the second to last of the four week festival, which had celebrations every Thursday night at the resort. The crowd was entertained that night by nationally recognized performer, KB. There was a large crowd of both tourists and Bahamians, who celebrated Bahamian culture together. The evening began with a local calypso band playing, while festival goers enjoyed a buffet of traditional Bahamian food, drinks, and perused local jewelry and crafts that were for sale.

    Logging on Abaco: Minister Kendred Dorsett Visits BNT Pilot logging Project

    The Minister of Environment and Housing, the Hon. Kendred Dorsett, came to Abaco on July 15 to visit sites of the pine forest. His inspection of the established forest in the north of the island was followed by a long visit to the site of the Bahamas National Trust logging pilot project in Spring City.

    Central Abaco District Council

    The contract for the Central Abaco Landfill has expired as the Central Abaco District Council awaits a decision from Central Government on who will be responsible for overseeing the management of the site going forward. During the Council’s meeting on November 6, Chief Councillor George Cornish told the council that he had negotiated a month to month schedule of payment for the maintenance of the landfill until a decision is made, which Administrator Cunningham suggested could happen as early as this month.
