    BEC appoints new acting manager

    Toni Seymour became the new acting manager for BEC’s Abaco Operations on August 6, and although surprised by the appointment, she expressed that she is looking forward to the challenge. It is a notable and historic move on Seymour’s part because a female has never held such a position on the Family Islands before. She explained that the position for manager was advertised internally and externally, and after completing an interview, she was selected for the position. So far, Seymour admitted that she has been overwhelmed by the support received from her colleagues, and she is hopeful that she can live up to their expectations.

    Minister of Education Tours Local Schools

    Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Jerome Fitzgerald, visited Abaco on July 12-13 to inspect the “physical plan of the government schools” across Abaco and was pleased with the general conditions of the schools here. Mr. Fitzgerald spoke of the need to focus more time on core subjects in schools “as we move forward to improve our educational system so that the students are not only prepared for the jobs that will come online but to be able to compete in the twenty-first century.”

    Minister of Housing Inspects Government Projects

    During his visit to Abaco on July 20, Minister of the Environment and Housing Kenred Dorsett addressed concerns with the number of government homes in Spring City that are boarded up and unoccupied stating that he intends to have them occupied as quickly as possible to avoid any further “depreciation of the assets here in Abaco.” “My concern continues to be that we have completed homes in Spring City and unfortunately my understanding is that we haven’t provided or facilitated the mortgages to enable people to occupy those homes,” he said.

    Gomez Chosen as FNM’s North Abaco Candidate

    On July 23 the Free National Movement officially selected and ratified their candidate to run in the North Abaco by-elections. Greg Gomez was chosen and accepted to run on the party’s behalf. The by-election will be called within sixty days after the Right Honourable Hubert Ingraham officially resigns from the House of Assembly on August 31. Other names, besides Mr. Gomez, which were considered by the FNM were Perry Thomas, Jackson McIntosh and Cay Mills. Mr. Gomez was chosen after nearly ten hours of deliberation.
