    Command Committee Storm Preparedness Meeting held ahead of hurricane season

    The Storm Preparedness Command Committee, comprised of all the key people in each field of preparedness in case of a tropical storm or a hurricane, met the afternoon of July 9, prompted by the possible arrival of Tropical Storm Chantal. The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s Office with the attendance of MP Renardo Curry, and was chaired by Administrator Preston Cunningham. The Port Authority, the Royal Bahamian Defense Force, the Road Traffic Department, The Fire and Rescue Services, the Department of Social Services, The Customs and Immigration Services as well as the Police, the Department of Education, the Ministry of Works, the Airport, BEC and the Red Cross were all represented.

    Exigency Order effective for three months

    Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie signed an Exigency Order on November 15 that will benefit residents who were impacted by Hurricane Sandy in October. Abaco was identified as one of the islands whose residents suffered loss.

    Historic landmark gone after centuries of inspiring awe

    Hole-in-the-Wall, the famous and historic landmark that jutted from the southern tip of Abaco, has been forever altered. The distinctive arch that formed a bridge from the mainland out to the rocky tip was the victim of extremely strong surges courtesy of Hurricane Sandy. What remains is a gap where the land-bridge once was suspended. White, un-weathered limestone now stands as a stark reminder of what once was.

    Hurricane damages Cancer Society Thrift Shop

    The Abaco Cancer Society Thrift Shop, located next to Abaco Groceries, was severely damaged during Hurricane Sandy. The north eastern end of the building was blown in and consequently much wind and water damage was done to the wall and ceiling of the building and the entire stock was ruined.
