Terrance Rodgers with the Department of Forestry visited several schools during the month of March to awaken students’ awareness towards the environment. His mission was to plant a tree in several schools on the island.
Lindar Industries, which had been granted a logging concession to cut pine trees on Abaco, started logging in the pine forest North of Treasure Cay in October, 2013. The trees cut were located on an area reserved for commercial and residential development. Logging is to resume in Treasure Cay and later near Spring City. Abaco pine is a high end product with wood as hard as maple.
The class-room training of prospective forestry officers that took place in the evening of January 30 was followed by two on-site demonstrations in the forest located in the Treasure Cay area, across and north of the airport. It was followed by a similar exercise on January 31 in the forest near Spring City and on February 1 again in North Abaco.
