On October 30 community members were invited to meet the new All Abaco Junkanoo & Culture Committee - now Chaired by artist Anthony “Big Mo” Morley. The function was hosted by Rhonda Hull with the Hon. Daniel Johnson, Minister of Youth Sports & Culture, as the special guest speaker.
With the view to ensure Abaco and other family islands are equipped with the necessary facilities to prepare their athletes for the soon to be revitalized Bahama Games, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Dr. Daniel Johnson said that work will commence right away on the promised sporting complex in Central Abaco.
The Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Daniel Johnson, accompanied by the Prime Minister’s Secretary - Mr. Calvin Balfour, by the Ministry Under Secretary - Mr. Eugene Poitier and by Mr. Nick Dean, with IBS Integrated, attended a meeting at Baker’s Bay Golf and Ocean Club to discuss a potential partnership between the Club and the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Culture to build a sports complex on Abaco.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture (MYSC) the Hon. Daniel Johnson met with various stakeholders to “put the final touches on the Abaco sports facilities project” for both Murphy Town and Moors Island, announcing that ground will be broken in May 2014.
Accompanied his Directors, among them the Director of Culture - Dr. Moxey-Brown, the Director of Sports - Timothy Munnings and the Director of Youth - Mr. Darren Turnquest, the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture - the Hon. Daniel Johnson, arrived on Abaco on Friday, February 22. He came to meet and discuss items in his portfolio with the MP for North Abaco and Island Administrators.
On Friday, December 28, 2012, Sea Spray Resort and Marina, on Elbow Cay, hosted the Second Annual Junkanoo Parade. The event each year aims to honour the memory of an Abaconian who has made a difference in the community. This year Monty Albury, who in fact founded Sea Spray, was honoured. Monty’s two sons, Bradley and James Albury, were present to receive a plaque and banner in his memory. Sea Spray’s manager, Junior Mernard, and Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture- Minister Daniel Johnson - presented the award.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Dr. Daniel Johnson, visited Abaco on July 12, and began his travels on Moore's Island where he met with Coach Anthony Williams, the athletes and their parents, and the community to congratulate them on what they have accomplished. He was impressed that four athletes from Moore’s Island attended the Penn Relays and captured the small school championships.
