Branden Sands of Cherokee Sound won a double championship title at the 11th annual Bahamas Optimist National Championship, which was held October 16-18 in Elbow Cay. Sands took first place in the Championship Fleet Red Class and first place overall, the first Abaconian to achieve this feat in the 11 years of the race taking place.
Branden Sands of Cherokee Sound, a 15-year-old student of Forest Heights Academy, is preparing to meet the next challenge in his remarkable young sailing career. In 2013 he competed against hundreds of junior sailors in the North American Optimists Championship in Bermuda and then in the World Optimist Championship in Lake Garda Italy. This year he will be competing between August 9 -21 in the Cork International Regatta and then in the Laser Youth Radial World Championship in Kingston, Ontario.
Thirteen year old Branden Sands of Cherokee Sound entered Grade 7 at Forest Heights Academy on September 2 and he must have found it pretty hard to come back down to earth after his amazing summer activities. Branden is a young sailor with a lot of promise and during the summer months he has been honing his skills at both sailing and teaching at home and abroad. Sailing is his passion and his heartfelt comment just before the beginning of term was; “I wish that summer would never end so that I can go on sailing.”
