Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation (BAIC) Chairman Dion Smith travelled to Abaco to formally launch the Abaco Agricultural Project with a groundbreaking ceremony at the site just off the Ernest Dean Highway on March 27.
The eleventh annual Christmas Festival was held this year on December 6 at the BAIC Farmers Market Park in Marsh Harbour.
Around 30 Abaco farmers held a meeting with the Department of Agriculture on November 20. The meeting was called and chaired by local Dept. head, Josephina Curry. Though a team from Nassau was scheduled to be present to hear local farmers’ concerns, they were unable to make it. Despite the Nassau representatives being absent, the meeting proceeded.
The Post Office opened its doors yesterday (Oct. 1) at the Bahamas Government Complex. It is located on the ground level of the complex's west wing next to the Passport Office and across the hall from the Office of the Auditor General.

Organized by the local Ministry of Tourism office, special festivities were held at the BAIC Marsh Harbour Farmer’s Market grounds on the evenings of July 11 and 12. The entertainment, intended for tourists and locals, corresponded with the 41st Independence Anniversary and was meant to replace the usual Goombay Summer Festival.
The South Abaco Farmer’s Association (SAFA) members held their monthly meeting on Oct. 21 at the Dundas Town Burial Society to discuss a number of key issues. First on the agenda was the resignation of Leslie Thompson, the former SAFA president, on Sept. 24. Thompson is now the inspector and consultant for the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation (BAIC).
The Analysis Workshop was facilitated by Manuel Messina and Shacara Lightbourne of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and BAIC officials at Abaco Central High School on July 31. Messina and Lightbourne began with a SWOT Analysis to gain a quick assessment of Abaco’s agricultural sector and then to form a strategic plan for the farmers to work toward.
