    Pothole relief comes as asphalt paving begins in earnest

    One day after a story ran in The Tribune concerning the deplorable condition of the roads in Central Abaco, workmen were seen patching potholes in the areas of most concern on Queen Elizabeth Drive and Don MacKay Boulevard in Marsh Harbour. Simmons Construction and Heavy Equipment Ltd., to whom the road paving contract in Central Abaco was given, redirected their work crew to give attention to areas that contained many potholes, filling them with asphalt and then steam-rolling to pack the patches.

    MP inspects Don MacKay road works

    The MP for North Abaco, Mr. Renardo Curry, inspected the on-going road work on Don Mackay Boulevard on September 2. He inspected the portion of road near the Airport Round-About which has already been resurfaced with two layers of asphalt. For the time being, the round-about is in the process of being filled. It will be re-surfaced when the fill is properly packed and rolled. Mr. Curry explained that as per the contract that was recently renegotiated, Simmons Company Ltd will repair the pot-holes on the boulevard and resurface the entire road with two coats of asphalt all the way to the traffic light. He then stated that work could continue all the way to the Crossing by Albury’s Ferry.

    Terminal conduit delays roadwork

    Paving work was suspended Thursday, September 5 through September 9 along Don MacKay Blvd. According to Simmons Construction the suspension of work was due to several factors; notably the arrival of a BTC work crew which intended to bury a conduit under a section of freshly laid asphalt.

    Progress report on the road works

    While road works progress at the airport access roads and roundabout Bill Simmons Construction and Heavy Equipment Co. Ltd. has faced several obstacles including weather interruptions and a delay in material shipment from Grand Bahama. A shipment of aggregate, which is required to continue the paving of Don Mackay Blvd to south of SC Bootle Hwy, was expected last week but has been delayed in Freeport and is now expected to arrive later this week. They expect to continue paving of Don Mackay Blvd. next week.

    Asphalt paving begins

    The long awaited road paving is now underway as the initial work begins on the airport road and Don MacKay Blvd. during the last week of August. It is being carried out by Bill Simmons Construction and Heavy Equipment Company Ltd. The initial work will include asphalt paving of the road beginning at the new airport road, continuing on to the airport round-about and then continuing on to about 400 feet south of S.C. Bootle Hwy.
