Yearly Golf Camp at the Abaco Club at Winding Bay

The fourth annual golf camp, sponsored by the Abaco Club at Winding Bay, took place the week of July 23-28. Fourteen young people from Abaco eagerly participated in the five day program. Apart from three or four new recruits most in attendance were returning participants who had enjoyed the teaching of previous years. The cookies distributed at the end of each session added to the excitement as well.

Hope Town Swimmers awarded at National Competition

Above and left to right: Samie Williams, Lilly Higgs, Albury Higgs and Stella Higgs received Academic All-Bahamas Swim Team Awards in Nassau at the RBC 2012 National Swim Meet. This award requires that swimmers maintain at least a 3.5 average and qualify for at least one event at the national swim meet. These four swimmers swim for the Swift Swim team, which is based in Nassau, and are coached locally by their parents. In addition, Stella Higgs won 2 silver medals, Lilly Higgs brought home 3 gold medals, and Albury Higgs was awarded the High Point Trophy in her age group winning 13 gold medals, 2 silver and a bronze.

Bahamian team does well in Caribbean Cup Tournament Abaconians earn high points

The National Darts Team came back from Belize with not only significant victories, especially for Abaconians Robin Albury and Angela Russell, but also with many memories of a great trip. The Bahamas placed second in the Caribbean Cup, with 81 points behind Florida (102 points). The National Team was also runner-up in the Team Event, with 48 points, losing again to Florida by only one point.

Abaco Boy Joins National Team

Young Dillon Albury enjoyed a great experience playing for the Freedom Farm National Baseball Team competing well in a tournament in North Carolina. The Freedom Farm team placed fourth in the Cal Ripken Baseball Southeastern Championships playing against 19 other teams from the United States from July 25 – 29.

Man-O-War held Summer Swim Camp

The Abaco Swim Club along with Mr. and Mrs. David Knowles and Tica Roberts organized a summer swim camp for the children in Man-O-War. Held from July 23 – 27 the swim camp encouraged the sport and helped the children learn the skills and strokes. At the end of the camp awards were presented to the attendees. The children and organizers all look forward to attending the swim camp again next year.

Kayak Challenge Schedule for November

Paddlers are encouraged to start practicing now for this year’s Kayak Challenge which will be held Saturday, November 3. This event is organized as a partnership between the Friends of the Environment and the Abaco Cancer Society and all funds raised benefit the two groups equally. Any kind of vessel without a motor can be used and this includes kayaks, paddle boards and canoes.

Upgrades Planned for Abaco’s Sporting Facilities

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Dr. Daniel Johnson, visited Abaco on July 12, and began his travels on Moore's Island where he met with Coach Anthony Williams, the athletes and their parents, and the community to congratulate them on what they have accomplished. He was impressed that four athletes from Moore’s Island attended the Penn Relays and captured the small school championships.

Abaconians Attend Darts Tournament in Belize

Abaconians headed to the 19th Caribbean Cup of Darts and 6th Americas Cup of Darts in Belize from July 20 to 30 as part of the Bahamas National Darts Team, which was comprised of approximately 30 members all together. Accompanying the participants were Malcolm Spicer, president of The Bahamas Darts Federation and World Darts Federation’s Americas Region as well as the Acting President for the Caribbean Darts Organization, and Kevin Higgs, Abaco Darts Team Manager. According to Spicer, at least 12 countries were expected to participate in the tournaments.

North Abaco Teams Dominate Softball games

The Lady Sluggers and the R.J. Runners met again for another round of softball on July 6 at the Murphy Town Ball Field. This time Tessa Louis led the team as pitcher in the absence of Rhonda Eldon. Their game was the first of a double-header series scheduled for the night.
