Minister prepares to address Abaco’s manufacturers

Minister of Financial Services, Ryan Pinder, held a brief meeting on August 24 in hopes to better understand the particular needs of Abaco and be prepared to adequately address manufacturers on the island when he returns in two weeks. Mr. Pinder worked with the Abaco Chamber of Commerce to get a small group of manufacturers together for a preliminary visit “to hear the issues that pertain to manufacturing on Abaco, so we can better plan a comprehensive trip.”

Angels Academy under new ownership

Angels Academy, located on Front Street, Marsh Harbour, is under new ownership. Michelle Roark, previously Michelle Albury, has purchased the school from the previous owner, April Higgs, and has been working hard for the beginning of the new school year. The staff at Angels Academy will remain the same with Barbara Johnson continuing as principal.

Department of Public Health to host Community Health Fair

The Department of Public Health in conjunction with the Marsh Harbour Government Clinic is inviting Abaconians to participate in their first Community Health Fair, which is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct.27 at the BAIC Farmers Market and Craft Center. The fair will be held under the theme: “Let’s Get Well Abaco.”

Analysis Workshop held for farmers

The Analysis Workshop was facilitated by Manuel Messina and Shacara Lightbourne of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and BAIC officials at Abaco Central High School on July 31. Messina and Lightbourne began with a SWOT Analysis to gain a quick assessment of Abaco’s agricultural sector and then to form a strategic plan for the farmers to work toward.

Powerboat Race and Summer Festival held at Treasure Cay Beach

The 7th Annual North Abaco Summer Festival and Power Boat Race was held from July 19 to July 22 at the Treasure Cay Public Beach. The venue was changed this year because of Hurricane Irene’s damage to the Green Turtle Cay Ferry Dock. According to Cliff Bootle, the event organizer, Saturday proved to be the main event. This year’s featured performers were Dylan McKenzie and the Impact Band who provided great entertainment on Saturday night.

Family Offers Reward for Missing Man

On August 1, Eleaxor Brown’s brother, Tyrone Brown, and his sister-in-law Nurse Martha Brown, made an appeal to the community of Abaco to assist them in finding him. “We are appealing to the public to kindly help us find my brother,” Tyrone solemnly said. “He has been missing since July 10, and we haven’t seen or heard from him since.”
