Hope Town Council members affirm their oath of office

In a brief but well-orchestrated ceremony on June 30 at St. James Methodist Church in Hope Town, the seven Council members of the Hope Town District Council were given the oath of office and immediately announced their unanimous choice for Chief and Deputy Chief Councillor. Senior Island Administrator Preston Cunningham conducted the ceremony with Methodist Minister, Rev. Marie Neilly, opening and closing the event with prayer.

Cherokee Quilt and Handicraft Show brings community together

The community of Cherokee Sound added one more feather to its cap on Whit Monday, June 9, when it hosted a Quilting Exhibition and Handicraft show in the community centre. Cherokee Sound is noted for its very interesting and varied shows which, over the years, have included art shows, sea shell exhibitions, dolls, teddy bears, angels and nativity shows.

$500,000 missing from Abaco Customs: Desposit “disappeared” on way to bank

According to Abaco Police, and confirmed by North Abaco MP Renardo Curry, around $500,000 has gone missing from the Customs Office in Marsh Harbour. The matter is before police, but no suspects are in custody as print time. The Central Detective Unit has launched an investigation.

Forest fires threaten South Abaco settlements

Casuarina Point and surrounding areas recently experienced severe prolonged forest fires. For three or four days the flames blazed relentlessly and for several more days the area was still smoking with patches of fire. It is believed that the fire broke out at the site of the old dump located on the side road between Casuarina Point and Big Mangrove Road.

Town meeting held in Sandy Point

A Town Meeting was held in the J.A. Pinder Primary School at Sandy Point on May 29 for all Council Chairmen from South Abaco to present an end-of-term report on what had been achieved in their townships during their past three year term. This would be the final meeting before the three-year term of all councillors came to an end on May 31.
