Churches Partner to Offer VBS at Grace Gym

Through a partnership with Marsh Harbour Gospel Chapel and Newton Baptist Church, which is based in Alabama, a Vacation Bible School was held from July 16-20 at Grace Gym. The VBS took on an Incrediworld Amazement Park theme where children experienced “a thrill ride through God’s Creation.” Kerry Brackett and Alyssa Johnson of Newton Baptist Church’s mission team were among 18 other members, and they expressed that it is their first time coming to The Bahamas. Although the Newton mission team planned to depart on July 19, members from Marsh Harbour Gospel Chapel continued the VBS until that Friday.

Closing Ceremony Held for Youth Camp in Sandy Point

The Ministry of Youth’s Summer Youth Camp called “Creative Juices” was held at J.A. Pinder Primary School from July 16-20. The camp was offered to children aged four to 16 years old, and saw a record number of 44 attending the camp. Principal Brenell Higgs was the camp coordinator and was assisted by a number of persons. On July 20 a closing ceremony was held and Khadijah Stuart served as the moderator.

FRIENDS Camp Teaches Campers about Abaco’s Ecosystems

The Friends of the Environment’s Junior Camp was held from July16-20 in Marsh Harbour and was geared for six to nine-year-old children. The Senior Camp was held from July 23-27 for 11 to 13-year olds. Now offered for the past six years, Friends Education Officer D’Shan Maycock recalled that the camp was first offered at Central Abaco Primary School but is now held at the Friends’ Educational Center According to Maycock, the junior campers learned about a different eco system every day, and included sea grass, pine forest, sandy beach, coral reef and mangrove habitats.

Maritime Camp Attracts Majority of Abaco High Schools

Students in Grades 8 and 9 on Abaco experienced the benefits of being involved in the Maritime Summer Camp, which was held for three weeks this summer. The program is sponsored by Campbell Shipping and facilitated by the College of The Bahamas. Two cohorts of 25 students were open to interested students. The summer camp helps to expose the students early on to what is available in maritime, and in turn, lets those involved in the industry know who they are.

Youth Leaders Certification Course Awards were Presented

In front of a panel of officials from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and from the Ministry of Education, 40 participants in the National Youth Leaders Certification Course were awarded certificates of completion and certificates of participation, during a ceremony that took place in the morning of July 18. The event was held at the Anglican Church Parish Hall and was moderated by one of the participants, Whitney Bain. Many other participants held a role in the ceremony from the invocation prayer by Andrew Lowe, the welcome remarks by Patricia Saunders, the interpretation of a musical selection by Tanna Newbold, to a message from the graduates by Theresa Simms, the vote of thanks by Rebecca Knowles and the benediction by Pastor Machuel Pinder.

Youth Leaders Certification Program Helps Connect Generations

A group of approximately thirty people - teachers, schools and church counselors and youth group directors among others - attended three sessions aimed at helping them understand young people. Deann Johnson presented the first session, which was held at St John’s Parish Hall on June 23. The presentation dealt with the personalities of today youth and underlined the role of a youth group.
