Abaco students win scholarships at Student of the Year Ceremony

Six Grade 6 students from Abaco schools won a total of $12,000 in high school scholarship money at the Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year Foundation's annual awards ceremony in Nassau recently. Every primary school in the Bahamas is invited to enter their top Grade 6 student in this competition each year. Students must not only excel in grade point average but leadership, church activities, community service, sports and extracurricular activities as well.

A group of four dogs and their owners/handlers traveled from Abaco to Nassau to compete in the 33rd Annual Bahamas Kennel Club International Dog Show returning with new titles and two Best in Shows.

Hope Town School’s Top 10 Activities for the 2011 – 2012 year:

Became the FIRST government school in the Caribbean to be awarded the prestigious certification of Green Flag Eco-School because of all the environmental activities the school has done for 30 years. Presented by the Ministry of Tourism and BREEF (Bahamas Reef Environmental Educational Foundation) who are the Bahamian sponsors for this United Nations Program schools all over the world vie for.

Hope Town Swimmers awarded at National Competition

Above and left to right: Samie Williams, Lilly Higgs, Albury Higgs and Stella Higgs received Academic All-Bahamas Swim Team Awards in Nassau at the RBC 2012 National Swim Meet. This award requires that swimmers maintain at least a 3.5 average and qualify for at least one event at the national swim meet. These four swimmers swim for the Swift Swim team, which is based in Nassau, and are coached locally by their parents. In addition, Stella Higgs won 2 silver medals, Lilly Higgs brought home 3 gold medals, and Albury Higgs was awarded the High Point Trophy in her age group winning 13 gold medals, 2 silver and a bronze.
