Carl and Gigi Allen, Texas Philanthropists, continue their commitment to empowering Bahamian students by ensuring they have access to the latest, cutting-edge educational technology. The Allens are leading the way and building on their long-term commitment to advancing educational opportunities. During a stop at the Grand Cay All Ages School they announced their intent to begin joint partnership with the Government and Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) to provide tablets to all 4th, 5th and 6th graders in the Abaco’s over the next year.
These devices will allow students to have access to a wide range of critical learning tools right at their fingertips, which they did not previously have.
Carl Allen is considered by many to be a local in The Bahamas due to his regular visits dating back to his childhood. He and his wife Gigi, recently purchased Walker’s Cay where they intend to invest and develop the island with the stated goal of returning it to its former glory days in 2020.
“The Bahamas have provided Gigi and me – and our entire family – with so many wonderful memories and experiences. We are committed and honoured to join with the Government, BTC and the wonderful School Administrators and Teachers here to do our part in ensuring that these kids have all the tools they need to succeed in life,” said Carl Allen. “These students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades are in crucial stages of their educational journeys – so Gigi and I believe providing them with a personal tablet will help streamline the way knowledge is acquired in the classroom.”
Carl and Gigi Allen are taking the initial step in upgrading the technology in the classroom. Mr. & Mrs. Allen, BTC and the Bahamian government have partnered up to provide Amazon Fire Tablets for all 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in the Abaco’s over the next year. The classroom will serve as an innovative atmosphere to serve all students’ learning styles while providing devices for students to learn about an education subject with the click of a button.
The Hon. Darren A. Henfield, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for North Abaco joined the Allens in announcing the program saying, “The significance of this effort by both the government and a generous private partner in the form of the Allens is hard to put into words. The Bahamian government stands alongside The Allen family in bettering the classroom as well as the overall education system across the country, we thank them for their generosity and support for our children.”
Ms. Miranda Wells, who has served as the acting Principal for the Grand Cay All Age School for the last (3) months and class teacher for the past 16 years, is excited about the future. Ms Wells stated that, “a core value of our school is to develop the students’ potential to its fullest, and the tablets will hugely aide in helping us to fulfil that everyday mission. Like us, Mr. and Mrs. Allen recognize that each student is unique in his or her interests and goals. The tablets they are providing will allow our students the opportunity for in-depth research regarding classroom material as well as pursue personal research interests.”
Sean Bowe, the BTC executive working hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Education and the Allens on the project said “BTC supports our children and will continue to ensure the students have access to an Internet connection that is both speedy and reliable. Working with great partners like the Allen family, we will work to help connect educational information to the student in an instant.”
