Judo Club Competes in Nationals and CARIFTA

The Abaco Judo Club traveled to Nassau to compete in CARIFTA Judo and the Bahamas Open National Tournament on June 22 and 23 and once again they represented Abaco well.

CARIFTA started Friday night and Abaco was well represented with four Judoka fighting for Team Bahamas.

Desmond Bootle Jr. captured his gold medal in the individual male Junior division and a silver in team fighting.  His brother Desmondo came away with bronze in both male junior and team fighting.

The female fighters had no individual fighting as no other countries fielded any female fighters but they did well in the team section of the tournament as they both competed on the international mixed teams.

Rachel Rolle helped her team to a gold medal and Kaylee Roberts worked hard to ensure a bronze medal for her team.

“Team Bahamas is looking great as we get ready for the World junior Judo Championships being hosted by the Bahamas in October of this year,” said Head Coach Regina Parotti.

In the Bahamas Open Nationals Tournament, the fighters continued on to an impressive overall medal count of eight individual medals.

“We took 10 fighters and got 8 medals total in Nationals. I was pleased with everyone’s fights,” said Parotti.

Of the only two that did not medal Vonte La Rose made it to the bronze medal round in his first tournament and lost to a very good fighter and Matthew Rose had to fight way out of his division because there was no competition in his division.

Matthew, at the age of 12 years-old, competed with 16 to 18-year-old Judoka and showed a lot of heart as all of his matches were hard fought.

“Our clubs focus now is the US Junior Open in July in which we have four Judoka planning to attend,” Coach Parotti said.

“At present five member of the Abaco Judo Club are spending the summer training and living with the National team in Nassau. They are Rachel Rolle, Desmond and Desmondo Bootle Dre Hall and Vonte La Rose.  This training is very hard and is being run by National Head Coach Oneysi Pons of Cuba,” she said.
