On Tuesday April 3, 2018, the Abaco Chamber of Commerce along with the Treasure Cay Property Owners Association invited interested persons to a town meeting where the Department of Inland Revenue was featured. The Treasure Cay Resort was gracious enough to host the meeting at the Spinnaker Restaurant.
In attendance was Department of Inland Revenue Under-Secretary Ms. Gaynell Rolle and two of her Abaco based support staff, twenty-five second homeowners, property managers and representatives from a local law firm.
George Riviere welcomed everyone on behalf of the Abaco Chamber of Commerce and opened the meeting. Mr. Bootle brought greetings from the ACC and stated that this is hopefully the first of many things that the chamber can do along with the Treasure Cay community in bringing information and solutions to issues and or concerns that they may have.
Ms. Rolle gave the attendees an overview of what the department does and specifically what information and assistance can be had here on Abaco. She clearly stated that recently there were some errors in the most recent property assessments and persons should get in touch with the local office for instructions on how to remedy their concerns. The DIR is scheduled to have assessors on island to carry out assessments during the month of April.
The attendees had lots of questions and Ms. Rolle did her best to answer them. Some of the concerns were to the amount of increases in Real Property Tax, if any of the funds that are collected were to repair boards and other infrastructure in the Treasure Cay community. There were questions pertaining to Real Property tax exemptions which would have dated prior to the act being passed.
At the end there was clear information given and persons were informed as to how they can get answers to all of their tax queries from the local office. Ms. Rolle and her staff met one on one with a few of the attendees for which they seemed grateful.
