As the School League Basketball season came to an end at the beginning of February and the championship games were scheduled to start, two teams were to face each other: the Agape Christian School’s Lady Eagles and the Patrick J Bethel’s Marlins. Senior Boys Eagles and Marlins were also to compete against each other in the finals.
The championship games took place over three days as the winning team had to secure two games out of three. They began on February 9 with the girls’ games after the play-offs the previous day and continued on to the 12th and 13th.
The Lady Eagles did not have any problem overtaking the Marlin Girls and they won two straight games, the Friday’s game and the Monday’s game with a final score of 38 to 29.
The Marlin Boys won the Friday competition; the Eagles took the Monday game.
The final game took place on the Tuesday evening amid supporters chanting and clapping for their teams, especially the Agape Christian School fans who had come in numbers and let themselves be known with loud participation. That championship game was very tight with never more than two points difference between each team who took the lead in turns until the final seconds when the Marlins committed a foul and Reagan Roberts shot the winning ball.
The Eagles won 69 to 67.
Coach Stephan Johnson received two trophies for Best Coach of the League for his success with the girls’ and with the boys’ teams. The MVP for the girls was Cranae Davis; the MVP for the senior boys team was Oswald Meadows .
The play-offs were contested on February 8 with the senior Eagles winning against the SC Bootle High School Dynamic Dolphins 83 to 70 and the Patrick J Bethel Marlins defeating the Forest Heights Academy Falcons, 50 to 43.
The Junior Boys and the Primary Boys and Girls were still playing as of printing date as they were to resume after the mid-break of February 21-26.
Coach Johnson was elated about his two teams’ victories. He said that it was the third year in a row that the Ladies Eagles won the championship. As for the boys it is the first time that they claimed a win since Coach Johnson took over three years ago.
“We should be invited to the Nationals,’ he mentioned proudly. In the meantime he is taking eleven senior boys to Nassau to play in the Hugh Campbell Tournament.
“Both teams really improved over the season, especially the boys,” he said adding that he was looking forward to their participation in the Nationals and the Hugh Campbell Tournament.
Craig Ricky assisted Coach Johnson with the Eagles. The coach for the Marlins was Shantell Penn; Kayle Reeves and Malik Penn coached the Falcons and Levar Stewart, Angela Stewart and Darion Spence trained the Dynamic Dolphins.
The referees for most of the games were Eustache Penn, Ishmael “Stretch” Morley and Gilbert Davis. The trophies were handed out by Christine Jenoure, President of the School League Association.
