Abaco Man Tops Pool Tournament

A local Abaco man bested the competition at the West Coast Challenge Pool Tournament in Tampa, Florida on April 6 through 9 winning the top prize in eight-ball singles pool competition.

Tyler ‘Pinky’ Russell, competing among the top tier pool shooters in the A Division in eight-ball singles competition went undefeated taking down several semi-pro pool masters in the process to win the first place trophy.

Previously, in international competition, Mr. Russell placed in the top 12 in nine-ball out of over 300 and in the top 65 in eight-ball out of over 500 competitors.

The Bahamian team competing this year was made up of eight competitors including Pinky and Cordero Russell of Abaco.

During his competition Pinky went against three persons who were considered masters, one of which he beat twice to earn the championship.

“I went in not expecting anything, not knowing anyone I was competing with but I didn’t feel intimidated at all,” he said.

Pinky says he encourages others to learn the game of pool, “because not only is it a fun game in itself, but it also teaches patience, hand and eye coordination and sportsmanship with others.”

He also added that it can take you around the world when you perfect your skill, “and to top it all off, when you get good enough, you can make a lot of money playing and nothing says fun to me like getting paid to have fun playing a game you love.”
