Cherokee Aviation Invests Through Training the Future

In today’s aviation world, Fixed Based Operators (FBO’s) face increasing challenges at every turn. One of the most significant challenges has been to ensure that the ground support personnel, mechanics, and pilots are trained and certified to meet the FAA’s mandates for compliance.

Cherokee Aviation (CA) is no different from any FBO in the world as they seek to meet the demand for increased air services by investing in training.

However, the approach that CA adopts as it relates to training and the high level of importance of investment in employee training and development, is one of the contributing factors that makes them one of the main players in the FBO industry in The Bahamas.

Perry Sawyer, Director of CA, indicated that ensuring training and development of its staff is at the heart of its business.

“We started out as a family business, and all of our employees are our family and are fully Bahamian. We believe that providing our employees with best training on an ongoing basis coupled with experience will not only enhance our operation, but it provides our pilots and engineers with the right sort of experience and education for a career in aviation and engineering specialties as well as it serves as a platform if they would like to advance further in the industry.”

Recently, 18 year old Emory Burrows received his pilot’s license in September at Cherokee Air.

He began his journey to becoming a pilot through the job experience in high school. He utilized the time gaining the experience and training from other pilots before going to flight school in St. Augustine, Florida.

“Flying planes has always been a passion of mine since I was a little boy. CA is a great company especially for young people who would like to learn the aviation field to become a part of.

Emory added that it is a nice feeling to be a part of a company when the owners are very generous as they afforded him with an opportunity a young person to learn how to fly and gain the experience.

Shannon Wong has been a pilot at Cherokee Air for the past five years.

He indicated that Cherokee Air focuses heavily on safety, and training and they manage a reliable operation based on excellence.  As a pilot that is important because when we are training younger pilots these are some of the attributes that is required.
