Recycling Needs to be a Priority

Dear Editor,

Our family has been visiting the Bahamas from the USA for several years. We love the quiet pace and natural beauty of the smaller islands. Green Turtle Cay is our favorite! The Bahamas have so much to offer residents and tourists but only if they keep the oceans and beaches healthy and clean.

All of our oceans are filling up with plastic trash threatening the health of people, animals, and sea life. At home, we try to do our part by purchasing carefully, reusing and recycling, and avoiding plastics as much as possible. It is very hard to come on vacation and have absolutely no way to recycle plastics or other materials.

This year we packed up and returned home with plastic cups and other recyclables but I know it was a very small drop in the bucket compared to all the recyclable materials that are going to the landfills and burn piles.

Recycling needs to be a government priority- for the health of its people and the waters that make it such a fantastic place to be. Please bring recycling back to the small islands!
