Trouble at Mermaid Reef

Dear Editor,

In the two years since I last visited Mermaid Reef something dreadful has happened.

There are fish, but most of the coral formations seem to be dead or dying, all but about two purple sea fans have disappeared. Everything looks brown, the vibrant colors have disappeared.

Worse, about six local kids were standing all over the reef.  Not just to adjust masks, they were walking all over it.

Reef balls in the area appear to have little or no growth. It’s a public place, the public doesn’t know enough to leave it alone.

Are there any possible ways to take pressure off the reef and encourage growth again?
