There is a movement in Abaco. Can you feel it? Have you noticed it? Have you joined it yet? Yes, there is a movement starting in Abaco. It is a movement towards fitness and health. And it is not a moment too soon!

The obesity rate in the Bahamas has jumped in recent years. In fact, in 2014 the Bahamas was ranked the sixth most obese country in the world according to the World Health Organization. And it’s no surprise… with fried foods as our most popular dishes and with exercise being a word not in our vocabulary often.

I think it is pretty clear that it is time for a change!

Recently, I have heard more people talk about health and fitness than I have ever heard in Abaco. Our eyes are finally being opened to how we have been slowly becoming more and more overweight and obese. And we are finally realizing that we have to do something about it!

There are lots of things happening all around Abaco.

Every few months there are 5k fun run/walks happening as fundraisers. People are starting to recognize that these runs are a great way to support our community and get in some exercise.

The Great Abaco Family Fun Fitness Weekend in March has been going on for a few years now in Treasure Cay. It is a great time to come together as a family and focus on exercise and fitness.

The FitCo gym in Marsh Harbour is now offering Cross Fit classes and is currently working on expanding to bring in more people. Be on the look out for the changes when expansion is complete.

Hope Town is full of fitness minded people. And with paddle boarding becoming more popular there, it is a great way to have fun, explore the islands, and burn some great calories.

Man-O-War has become a popular cay when it comes to fitness. Amelia Putman has put her heart and soul into starting up Man-O-War Youth Fitness (or MOWY Fitness). Each year they host the Jingle Jog 5k run around Christmas time and many other events to raise awareness in Abaco including a Luau and an Abaco Trash-A-Thon.

More fitness classes are being offered throughout the island. Locals are starting to realize that fitness classes are not just for “fit” people. They are for everyone who wants to make a change. Yoga, Boot Camps, and Cross Fit can be found taking place in Abaco. And of course there are my classes, Insanity, Cize, and PiYo (and TurboKick coming in the summer), which are growing in numbers every week. And we are working on expanding to bring classes to the outer cays every few weeks as well. (If you would like to me to come to your cay or settlement on a Saturday, shoot me an email).

Each morning and afternoon, more and more locals can be seen walking, running, or biking throughout town.

Are you ready to join the movement? It doesn’t take drastic measures. It just takes finding an activity you enjoy and going for it. If together we can stay strong, stay persistent, and keep going, we can make a change!
