According to Abaco Softball Association (ASA) President Haziel McDonald, the 2016 Softball Season opening is set for May 20. So far, there are five men’s softball teams and three women’s softball teams looking to join the league.

All teams are required to pay a corporate sponsorship fee of $500 by April 27, along with player’s fee of $40 per player by May 11. The fee for junior players (18 and under) is $10 each. The Abaco Softball tournament is scheduled for July 1 & 2, followed by the softball playoffs, which begin August 26. The Bahamas Softball Federation (BSF) Round Robin Tournament is on October 20 in New Providence.

Leading up to the season opening, the local police are organizing a tournament for the first weekend in May. The following weekend is reserved for an umpire’s clinic complete with certified courses for interested persons.

McDonald also expressed a desire to see more junior players in the league particularly with a team of their own to represent their respective schools in the Annual Austin Knowles National High School Softball Tournament. He said that Abaco has never participated, and he is confident that our island can contend for a medal. McDonald reiterated wanting to see Abaco represented, so young players including male and female players are encouraged to participate in the next tournament.

This year, games are planned for Murphy Town, Cooper’s Town and Man-O-War Cay softball fields.
