ACH Students Find Success in Nassau Eureka Science Competition

Two ninth grade students from Abaco Central High School made their principal, Mr. Ricardo Ferguson, proud when they placed first in the junior division of the Eureka Science Competition.

Maliyah Forbes and Donte LaRose traveled to Nassau during the week of February 1-5 accompanied of their science teacher Dametra Moss, to enter the results of their research concerning ecological footprints on areas of Abaco, in the Eureka Science Competition.

The event that was organized by the Ministry of Education’s Science & Technology Department was meant to get students in primary, junior high and high schools,  to identify local ecological problems, using deduction and scientific methods to reach their conclusion. They could base their research using one of two categories: innovation or investigation.

Miyalah and Donte chose the investigation method to gather information on the ecological foot-prints left by people of Central and South Abaco.

Identifying residents of those areas within the school, they gave survey material to the sample group to complete. Different data such as size of the home, the mode of transportation, the food consumed, resources utilized and trash contribution was to be gathered from residents of Marsh Harbour, Crossing Rocks, Spring City and Sandy Point.

Before reaching a conclusion, they offered a hypothesis that was supported by a display of graphs and entered data. Their conclusion was that Sandy Point had the largest ecological footprints, mostly because of the distance its residents travel to Marsh Harbour for work, school, grocery shopping and other necessary errands. The use of motor vehicles contributes to a large eco-footprint because of fossil fuel pollution.

Ms. Moss explained that her students were judged in two rounds of elimination. They were among eight students out of thirty left to be judged in the second round.

Donte, speaking on how difficult it was to participate in the event, “It was just like being in school,” he answered. “We just had to work on it”.

For Maliyah, it was a good experience, not only to enter the competition, but also to go to Nassau and visit another island for the first time.

Needless to say their teacher and Principal thought it was a great accomplishment.
