Message From the Newly Elected President of The Abaco Chamber of Commerce

Daphne deGregory-Miaoulis

The Abaco Chamber of Commerce

I wish to thank the recently elected Board of Directors of the Abaco Chamber of Commerce for their confidence in having elected me to serve in the capacity of President.

It is my desire, along with an awesome Board of Directors, to raise awareness of the value that a Chamber of Commerce brings to the business community and by extension, the greater community.  It is hopeful that we will inspire more businesses to become members and to take a more active role in shaping the growth and development of The Abacos at large.

The beauty of the Chamber is that it allows an avenue through-which a community can collectively participate in the decision making of how they wish to shape their communities. Together as one voice we can be heard at government levels and with the support and assistance of The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation we have the ability to impact decisions that directly affect us. We are free of political influence or persuasion. We speak collectively with one voice and not as individuals with personal opinions or motives.

Some of the objectives of this administration are beautification of our island, reduction of visible garbage, better policing of how we use our public spaces, higher quality service, greater hospitality, reduction of petty crime with better surveillance, the encouragement of solar lighting in public spaces, agricultural education to promote food security for our island, respect for the environment, unification of our communities, access to training for better business management for small and medium size businesses and career fairs for our youth to raise awareness and encourage a stronger entrepreneurial spirit.

We would also like to foster more networking between member businesses and provide a web presence for advertising through our website. It is important for all of us to purchase goods and services at home, the better one does the better we all do. When visitors and investors are visiting a country for the first time it is common for them to search Chamber websites for reputable businesses to do business with or for services. Your chamber member certificate and logo on your door are valuable tools to use in your business.

All of these objectives and more are possible with the support of all of our members and the community at large. We will actively encourage more persons to join and take part in these efforts through various committees. There is a misconception that the Chamber only represents big business but this is far from the truth. Any person or business can become a member, if you have a particular passion or concern, if you have time to volunteer and take an active role in being a part of change, if you are frustrated with lack of performance, ineffective representation then you are a perfect candidate for membership! It is easy to criticize but it is productive to get involved.

While I welcome this challenge and privilege to serve our community I invite you to step up and join your Abaco Chamber and truly make this a better place to live, to do business and a better destination to attract and grow our visitor arrivals! Along with our local business community, our second home owners have fueled the growth of the Abacos. However, with increased competition, higher crime rates and less value for the dollar we are walking on egg shells if we don’t take a serious and aggressive approach to improving our goods and services. Each one of us has the ability to make a difference, the time is now and it starts with each one of us!

Join your Abaco Chamber of Commerce and make a difference! For more information please visit our website www.abacochamber.org and register your business.
