The Elbow Reef Lighthouse Society (ERLS) is undertaking a major restoration project to replace the diamond weatherglass panes protecting the lanternroom. Abaco was fortunate not feel the full force of the 130+ mile per hour winds of hurricane Joaquin. These hurricane force winds would have completely destroyed many of the weakened diamond shaped panes allowing water to enter the lighthouse and damage our antique first order Fresnel lens, its winding machinery and burner.
The entire scope of the project to replace the diamond glass panes and metal stripping will be approximately $120,000.
To raise funds for the project ERLS is presenting a “Barefoot Black Tie Event” – Diamonds are Forever. The event, taking place at the Abaco Inn at 7pm on January 30, 2016, will feature a surprise celebrity chef who will create a six-course dinner for guests. Wine pairings will be featured and Green Turtle Cay’s “Lucky” will provide music for the elegant evening.
The first thirty persons to purchase a diamond glass pane ($2,000) for the Lighthouse will be honoured at the Gala feast and have a plaque installed at the Lighthouse. Contact the ERLS at 458-5425 or 375-8140.
ERLS is a society of volunteers working for the benefit of all persons who love our lighthouse and want to make sure it remains intact and restored for future generations to enjoy.
