Twelve of Churton Toote’s 32 karate students received their yellow belts along with certificates during his Yellow Belt Promotion ceremony on Sept. 23.

According to Toote, this was a first stage promotion for the students in the Nisei Goju karate program that he teaches.

“There are five stages: white, green, purple, brown and black belt,” he explained. “The yellow belt is a stage a bit higher than white to motivate the students.”

Students learn basic steps accompanied by basic blocks and basic punches during their classes, which are held Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Before bringing the ceremony to a close, Toote also wished to thank all parents for their support namely Mrs. Jenny King, Ms. Wright, Ms. Evans and Ms. Taylor.
