Schools throughout Abaco are now opened following a brief delay due to tropical storm Erica that was forecasted to hit the Bahamas.
Students were eager to return to school but there were many who were in need of school supplies. Residents and local officials were approached by China Harbor Construction Company as to the needs of the children and what they could do to support such needs. It was determined that the greatest needs were school supplies.
Company officials responded immediately, ordering the supplies to be delivered in time for school. Just before the opening day, a large inventory of school supplies were on Abaco for distributions.
CHEC officials said the school supplies included: backpacks, school bags, books and pencil boxes. They were given out to the primary school children in Mount Hope to help prepare them for the school year. The students and parents gave them a warm welcome and were orderly as the supplies were distributed. The company went a step further and provided school supplies for children of all of their local employees on the project.
China Harbor Construction Company is a state owned China Company and was awarded a $39 million contract to build the new port facility at Conch Rock Creek, just north of Coopers Town. Although the project was delayed more than a year, work is underway; the projected is expected to be completed in 18 months. China Harbor representatives said they will continue to support the local area while they are progressing with the project.
