The Bahamas celebrated 42 years of Independence on Friday, July 10, and Man-O-War is one Cay that sure knows how to celebrate. There were games, contests and fun for the whole family.

The day started bright and early at the ball field with races for the kids and a tug-o-war for the adults. Then the festivities moved to the seaside for water activities and lunch. Along with everyone’s old favourites, including conch breaking, sawing, hammering, and of course the most anticipated event, the slippery pole, a new contest was introduced this year.

The BYOC (Bring Your Own Conch) conch blowing contest was a hit. There were three categories for youth and adults to compete in: most creative, who tried the hardest and who sounded the longest.

The day ended where it began, at the ball field, with an awards ceremony and a fireworks display.
