Steven Gardiner became the fourth fastest runner in Bahamian history on June 6. He dropped his time from 44.98 to 44.64 – a difference that may seem small, but has a huge impact.

The Abaco runner posted a pair of victories recently. One, at the Star Athletics Sprint Classic in Montverde, FL, and the most recent at the ExxonMobil Bislett Games in Oslo, Bislett. At the Bislett Games he blew away his competition with Matthew Hudson-Smith (of Great Britain) posting a time of 45.09.

Gardiner is the youngest Bahamian to run below the 45 second mark. He is 19.

Gardiner found international acclaim last year at the IAAF World Junior Championships when he finished third in the semi-final 200m heat.

Though currently coached by George Cleare, who called Gardiner a “boy wonder dream kid,” he started his running career on the grass tracks of Moore’s Island Abaco under the tutelage of Coach Anthony Williams.

The Moore’s Island Student Athlete Program is currently trying to crowdfund a new dorm.
