Based upon bringing a global economic change to the settlements of North Abaco with a diversity of programs and infrastructural developments, the new North Abaco Local Government Board, under the leadership of district council Steve Pedician, put the wheels in motion to achieve its policies. After the township meeting that was held on April 23, Chairperson Sandra Lee Parker in an interview said that many reports came to her office concerning the Wood Cay Dock whose residents were concerned about the safety of the structure after being damaged during Hurricane Sandy in 2007.
According to reports given to the North Abaco District Council Deputy Chairman Wilton Saunders, two young children from the settlement fell from the dock into the water but were not seriously hurt while fishing on the dock. This dilemma drew attention not only to those living in the Wood Cay settlement but to others in the nearby vicinity as to the safety of all government docks. This critical step demands immediate attention according to the Chief Engineer William Kerzel of the Ministry of Works and Urban Development. The \need for these repairs warrant Ministry consideration.
After the North Abaco District Council Meetings the decision was made to refurbish the Wood Cay Dock with the small budget that was allocated to assist in the development of the five settlements. Therefore, a few local contractors were notified pertaining to the work that needed to be accomplished. Deputy Chairman Saunders, being a resident of Wood Cay, took the first steps by purchasing the materials needed.
Collectively the wheels were set in motion and the announcement was made as candidates came forward with their bids. Calvin Parker Construction Company of Fox Town was contracted with the project commencing in the beginning of May. Mr. Parker said that some of the wood beams and rafters needed to be replaced, which included the restructuring of the fish stand and seating area.
District Chairperson of North Abaco Council Sandra Lee Parker said that now, as the summer is approaching and when most children used the dock for fishing, it is now completely repaired. She commended the residents for being patient with the North Abaco Local Government Board, and that this is only the beginning of what is to come for the Northern Region of Abaco.
