The second leg of the 2015 Bahamas Billfish Championship recently wrapped up down in rustic Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos and it was a great fishing tournament, not to mention a good time!

‘Hit N Run,’ a 68-foot F&S owned by Byron Russell killed it on the last day out on the water and took home first place honors. They released four white marlin, a sailfish and completed the day with a blue marlin for a Grand Slam. The runner-up was Joe Posillico’s 61-foot Viking ‘Torta.’ ‘Torta’ had an exciting second day releasing two white marlin, a blue marlin and a sailfish for their own Grand Slam. Third place went to ‘Wave Paver,’ a 61-foot Garlington owned by Jr. Davis. Davis finished 2nd in the previous Guana Cay Championship.

The billfish were biting and many boats caught several a day, not to mention some absolutely mammoth mahi that kept everybody back on land fat and happy. All of the winners received Costa sunglasses, Roff’s Ocean Fishing Forecast gift certificates, and sweet trophies custom-designed by Vetus Maxwell.

Out on the water wasn’t the only place that anglers had some fun while in Green Turtle. Friday night there was a cocktail party and bonfire at The Tranquil Turtle at Bluff House. Fishermen partied and enjoyed themselves well into the evening in the tranquil beachside setting—of course bearing in mind that they needed to be on the water bright and early the next day. Saturday saw another super-fun closing party at the world-famous Yacht Club Pub, AKA The Dollar Bill Bar, which is located at the Green Turtle Club Resort & Marina. The bar’s walls are lined by thousands and thousands of signed dollar bills, and the rum punch was once voted the best in the entire Caribbean by Esquire magazine.

The BBC’s generous sponsors for this leg of the tourney included: Vetus Maxwell, who supplied trophies and sponsored the opening-night dinner; AIG who sponsored the closing-night dinner; Caterpillar Marine Power who hosted the closing-night cocktail party; Costa sunglasses who supplied sunglasses for the winners and also hosted the opening-night cocktail party; ZF Marine who served up some tasty rum punch on the docks; and Roff’s Fishing Forecast who supplied gift certificates for the winners.

The next leg of the BBC promises to be an exciting one with anglers traveling to Treasure Cay on May 27. As we look forward to Leg 3 in Treasure Cay we are reminded that this is the location where the current Bahamas blue marlin record was caught – 1119 pounds by the ‘Double Dog’ during the BBC in 2011. Typically at this time of year we will see a drop off of white marlin as the blue marlin start to move in. The fourth and final leg is slated for Marsh Harbour June 10th – 13th. The Bahamas Billfish Champion will be crowned here, the final leg of the 2015 Bahamas Billfish Championship.
