The Man-O-War Luau was held on March 28 at the Man-O-War Marina and was hosted by MOWY Fitness, an organization on the Cay designed to help promote physical fitness with youth and adults.
The organization is raising money for a community fitness center on the island.
There was an action packed grass skirt/hula contest that got everyone’s attention. Little Arianna Cruz won the kids’ contest. Captain Dave, a regular in Abaco, stole the trophy from reigning champion Knox McKee with an amazing grass skirt dance. The limbo contest had lots of competition, but Toren Lee and his mom, Jamie, won the trophies for the youth and adult contest.
Albury’s Ferry brought people from Hope Town and Marsh Harbour at a special discounted rate and helped make the event even bigger and more successful. Children were getting their faces painted by Abigail Philpott, playing organized games with Tica Roberts, and swimming all afternoon. The music was provided by Karib Entertainment and was filled with Hawaiian favorites.
Michael Albury hosted an entertaining live auction with incredible items from Atlantis to private Bahamian flight tours. The silent auction was full of great donations from Sally’s Seaside Boutique, Furniture Plus, and many others.
DND Marine Services started the fire early that morning at 5:30am and cooked all the meat for the event. Om Grown Greens out of Hope Town helped make a delicious salad and all the locals on the island provided the cole slaw, peas ‘n’ rice, and other appetizers. The menu was full of local flare with a Hawaiian vibe.
If you were not able to make it to the Man-O-War Luau this year, make sure you mark your calendars for March 19, 2016 because you will not want to miss this Hawaiian party.
The organizers wish to thank all their sponsors and supporters.
