Boat Owners and residents are expressing concerns about the unusually high amount of boat thefts occurring this year in the area of Abaco and the Northern Bahamas in general.

Boat Theft and Security Information, a Facebook group for dissemination of BOLO alerts, has seen a lot of traffic these first three months.

Thefts have also not been limited to whole boats, but people have found equipment, engines and lower units stolen as well.

One resident feels the punishment presently meted out is not enough. He said persons caught stealing are slapped with small fines only to be later released and return to making thousands of dollars off their illegal activites.

He said “it is out of control and the [boating] season is just about to start.”

Police had not returned with a response regarding the thefts as of press time.
