It is Christmas so I’ll be taking a break from my typical ramblings hosted in this space. Instead, I’m going to focus on things that make me happy. Things like family and friends, of which I am blessed to have both.
Could I write an analogue touching on the hypocrisy of our elected officials, or a metaphor pointing out the failures of successive governments to establish a transparent political system? Something like – “the collective amount of coal Santa will leave our politicians this year will be enough to solve our country’s energy crises.”
Maybe in another editorial, but not here – because this is Christmas! And I want you to know how blessed we are to stick our feet in sand this time of year instead of snow.
Could I write about how the squabbling between the BEC unions and Chairman Miller is directly harming this nation’s economic future? Something like – “I’ve gone through six boxes of Christmas lights because power surges keep blowing all the bulbs.”
Maybe in another editorial, but not here – because this is Christmas! And I want to instead recognize everyone in our community who makes a difference simply because they care enough to take action.
Could I harp on the crime and corruption plaguing our land? Something like – “Santa wasn’t surprised by how many Bahamians were on his naughty list. He was surprised by how many on that list were holding office.”
Maybe in another editorial, but not here – because this is Christmas! And instead I want to take a moment to be thankful that by-and-large the Bahamian people, our people, are warm, generous, friendly and caring.
Christmas is a time to be grateful and reflect on our blessings. Things might not be perfect. In fact things may not be going so well for you right now. Of course not everything is going to be roses. And you may have had a tough year behind you and you may be looking at another one ahead. But right now, in this season, there is someone you can count dear to you and some blessing you can own as yours. Take a moment and enjoy them.
Have a happy holiday, because this is Christmas!
