The Abaco Softball Association (ASA) Playoff Games began on the weekend of Sept. 12 at the Murphy Town Ball Field to the excitement of fans. The first showdown was between the Hope Town Wreckers and Simple Solution Sharks in the best-of-seven series.

The Sharks beat the Wreckers: 12 to 7.  The featured game between the Creter’s Bulldogs and DNR Sluggers caused a major upset for the Sluggers. The Bulldogs were merciless and defeated the Sluggers with a score of 11 to 0.

The following night, the Sharks delivered a repeat performance for the Wreckers, scoring 12 runs while the Wreckers scored six runs. History would repeat itself in the Bulldogs and Sluggers’ game when the Bulldogs scored 11 runs again leaving no opportunity for the Sluggers to score any runs.

On Sept. 19, the Bulldogs upped the ante to score 15 runs, and still no runs for the Sluggers. However, the Wreckers proved they had enough in their game against the Sharks. The Wreckers captured the game this time with 11 runs to the Sharks’ four runs.

Although their next game only allowed them to get away “by the skin of their teeth,” it was worth the chance for the Wreckers. They narrowly won by a one-point lead to score seven runs, while the Sharks scored six runs.

Sept. 26 gave the DNR Sluggers one more opportunity to stay in the running for championships, but fate was not on their side. The Bulldogs won their final playoff game against the DNR Sluggers beating them 11 to 1, and advanced to the Abaco Championships. In the last game of the night, the Wreckers won 6 to 5 over the Sharks in Game 5, so the Wreckers were up 3-2 in the series with Game 6Saturday night. To the disappointment of the Wreckers, the Sharks edged them out in extra innings to tie the series 3-3.

A deciding game was held on Tuesday night between the Wreckers and the Sharks to determine who would advance to the championships to play against the Bulldogs. Those details will appear in the next edition of The Abaconian.

Nevertheless, Abaco Softball Championships will begin on Friday continuing onto Saturday. The women and men’s softball team winners from Abaco will then travel to Nassau for the Bahamas National Softball Championships, which takes place from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2.

This weekend, the winners of the ASA raffle drawing will also be announced.
