The 7th Annual North Abaco Summer Festival and Power Boat Race was held from July 19 to July 22 at the Treasure Cay Public Beach. The venue was changed this year because of Hurricane Irene’s damage to the Green Turtle Cay Ferry Dock.
According to Cliff Bootle, the event organizer, Saturday proved to be the main event. This year’s featured performers were Dylan McKenzie and the Impact Band who provided great entertainment on Saturday night.
In previous years, the boat races always drew a large crowd. However, they weren’t able to secure enough sponsors to cover fuel expenses and hotel accommodations for participants in the boat race. Added to that, Mr. Bootle said there was a decline in the day with people coming out and participating in the beach activities. Nevertheless, he still called it a successful day.
The next day, all activities were cancelled because of inclement weather.
As they plan for future events, Mr. Bootle said that they will phase the event out to more of a summer festival and beach event and offer cash prizes. Depending on sponsors coming through, he was uncertain if the boat races would continue because they run the committee into thousands of dollars.
Overall, though, Mr. Bootle was pleased with the domestic and international visitors that attended the event as well as the amount of food vendors that supported the summer festival.
